UPTOWN FASHION WEEK RETURNS TO NORTHERN MANHATTAN TO BRING DOWNTOWN STYLE TO WASHINGTON HEIGHTS

Event will Shed Light on Domestic Violence to Educate Youth about Pervasive Issue in Washington Heights/Inwood Communities

New York, N.Y. - On February 14th, 2013, Uptown Fashion Week is returning to Washington Heights to show off the designs of some of the biggest names in fashion to the Northern Manhattan community. After the success of last year's event, featured recently on the VH1 show "Black Ink Project", the event is expected to be even bigger this year. The event is organized and hosted by the young Dominican entrepreneur, Albania Rosario. Co-hosted by NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, NYS Senator Adriano Espaillat and NYS Assembly Member Gabriela Rosa, Uptown Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 will be a major socialite event for the burgeoning area. Bringing the culture and style of downtown fashion to Washington Heights is the latest step in the escalating stature of the neighborhood, now featured nationally on MTV in a primetime reality show. The cast of the show "Washington Heights" will be in attendance to celebrate the beautiful outfits and top designers. It will be housed in the recently built, avant-garde, Triangle Building in the heart of Washington Heights.

The purpose of the event is to expand the reach of the downtown fashion industry to the uptown community, while highlighting an important issue in the neighborhood. The event will promote awareness about domestic violence in relationships, a major problem in Northern Manhattan that has claimed the lives of countless women over the past several years. Since the murder of Edith Rojas in Washington Heights-a medical student who was killed by her ex-boyfriend on New Year's Eve-it is imperative that our city recognize that a change must be made. Uptown Fashion Week will feature a purple carpet rather than red, in remembrance and commemoration of the victims of domestic violence. All notable guests will walk the purple carpet in support of the fight against this terrible problem.

Showcases will be presented by a plethora of diverse designers from around the world, including Adrian Alicea, whose designs have been featured in top magazines such as Vogue. The preeminent designs have been worn by some of the biggest celebrities today including Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Lala Vazquez. Additionally the show will feature Leslie Figueroa & Miss Nunez, owners of Weirdo Ink Designs; they recently introduced their new collection in the reality show Washington Heights.
The event will showcase clothing, artistry, music, jewelry and high fashion cosmetic products and will also be co-sponsored by Arbonne Cosmetics, Budlight, Send2Print, El Morocco, Vipvida Productions, & Amodels NYC.
